Project Spotlight: Fire Alarm Installation at Ware’s Eastern Waste Transfer Centre

Status: In Progress
Client: G4S Fire and Security
Principal Contractor: Balfour Beatty
System Installed: Gent Fire Alarm

Tillotson Electrical Limited is proud to be delivering the fire alarm installation for Ware’s new Eastern Waste Transfer Centre—a vital infrastructure project led by Balfour Beatty and secured by G4S Fire and Security.

Our responsibility is the installation of a Gent fire alarm system, chosen for its reliability, scalability, and compliance with BS 5839 standards. The system will provide robust protection across the facility, supporting early detection and coordinated response in a high-risk operational environment.

Site Overview

Ware’s Eastern Waste Transfer Centre is a £24 million development designed to transform Hertfordshire’s waste logistics. Located behind the existing Ware Recycling Centre on Westmill Road, the site spans approximately 1.4 hectares of reclaimed landfill—an area previously closed and unused for years.
The facility will serve as a second transfer hub for kerbside waste, reducing reliance on Waterdale near Watford and significantly cutting haulage mileage, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions. Waste will be sorted and bulked before onward transport for recycling or landfill, streamlining operations across the county.

Construction began in early 2024, with operational launch targeted for early 2026. Engineering innovation has been key: piling was required to float a concrete slab across the old landfill, enabling safe construction on challenging terrain. Planning variations have also allowed for infrastructure upgrades, including water tanks and enhanced safety systems.

Our Approach

This project reflects our commitment to:

  • Compliance-first installations.
  • Seamless coordination with principal contractors.
  • Operating safely under Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm protocol.

Every phase—from containment routes to system integration—has been mapped against regulatory benchmarks and teachable frameworks for future replication. Our team is working closely with G4S and Balfour Beatty to ensure smooth delivery aligned with site-wide safety protocols and operational timelines.

Stay tuned for final updates and a behind-the-scenes look at how we deliver fire safety with precision and professionalism in mind.
